Nearly a century

Columbus Cafe grew out of North Beach’s Italian, waterfront and working-class history—and has remained a neighborhood gathering place through generations of San Francisco change.
- 1935Columbus Cafe opens at 430 Columbus Avenue, built for the longshoremen and working people of the waterfront.
- 1936The bar moves to 458 Columbus Avenue—the year carried forward in its familiar “Est. 1936” identity.
- 1948Columbus Cafe settles at 562 Green Street, where the nautical spirit and neighborhood bar tradition continue today.
- 2020Longtime bartenders Beka Woods-Kennedy, Ben Morrison and Will DeVault buy the bar to keep the legacy alive.
- 2025San Francisco formally recognizes Columbus Cafe on the Legacy Business Registry.
